Chapter Ten

The man sitting on the bench outside of the lodge jumped to his feet as the sisters approached. He looked around thirty-five, with long brown hair that was pulled back into a neat ponytail. He was wearing jeans, and a T-shirt with the name of the cable company printed on it.

“Hi,” he said, smiling as he stood up. “How are you?”

“We’re fine,” Abigail replied. “How are you?”

The man sighed. “I’m sad and confused, and I’m also overdue on visiting you.”

Abigail and Mandy stopped at the bench.

“Overdue?” Abigail repeated.

He shrugged. “It’s a small town. I’m the entire service department for the cable company, but I’m also a salesman, too. I should have come out to see you as soon as you bought the lodge. Jack and Janet only ever wanted basic cable in the rooms and cottages. It’s my job to persuade you that you need a lot more than that.”

Abigail laughed. “I think what we have is perfectly adequate.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right, but don’t tell my boss I said that. He’d argue that hotels in Buffalo offer all sorts of premium channels to their guests.”

“We aren’t exactly in competition with those hotels, though,” Mandy said. “And they have quite a lot of competition among themselves. We’re the only place to stay in Nightshade. Our problem is convincing people they want to come here in the first place. I can’t imagine a few extra television channels would help much.”

“Yeah, Nightshade isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot. Still, it’s my job to come out and try to convince you that a few movie channels will turn the Sunset Lodge into everyone’s favorite tourist destination.”

“I’m Abigail Clark, by the way.”

He nodded. “Sorry, I’m doing this all wrong. My boss tells me all the time that I’m a terrible salesman. I think he’d replace me if he could, but I’m an excellent installer.”

Both sisters grinned.

“That seems like a more important skill,” Mandy said.

“It is, until everyone in town has cable, and I end up with nothing to install for days on end. Then he expects me to go around to all of the local businesses and try to sell them cable and premium channels.” He sighed and then chuckled. “I’m still doing this all wrong. I’m Theo Pool. Welcome to Nightshade.”

He held out a hand.

“It’s nice to meet you,” Abigail said as she shook it.

“I’m Mandy, by the way. Mandy Clark, Abigail’s sister.”

“You look enough alike that I’d have guessed that if I hadn’t already known. But everyone in town is talking about you two.”

Abigail sighed. “I lived in New York City for too long. There, no one knows anything about anyone else.”

“I don’t think I’d like that,” Theo said. “But I grew up in Nightshade. I’m used to everyone knowing everything about me. It saves time, too. I rarely have to introduce myself to anyone, which is good, because clearly, I never remember to do it anyway.”

The sisters smiled again.

“So you came out here to try to talk us into buying some premium channels?” Abigail asked.
